Lisbon - Coimbra - Porto

The city is also home to the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, with a splendid 18th century library - the Joanina Library. From here, head to a local restaurant for a traditional Portuguese lunch, and continue on to Porto to embark the Queen Isabel (5T), the most luxurious vessel on the Douro.

Day 2

Porto - cruising the River Douro - Entre-os-Rios

There’s much more to Portugal’s second city than its eponymous fortified wine - historic architecture, cutting-edge design, fabulous food and a laid-back vibe. Join a panoramic tour including the 19th century Stock Exchange Palace, the hilltop cathedral and Santa Catarina. Or take a walking tour and climb 249 steps to the top of Clérigos Tower for the best view in Porto; visit Livraria Lello, São Bento railway station and the Church of Saint Francis, the city’s finest example of Gothic architecture. Later, we cruise up the Douro towards Entre-os-Rios.

Day 3

Cruising the River Douro - Régua - Pinhão

Today is all about wine, which has been cultivated in the Douro River Valley since ancient Roman times. Learn the history of Port during your visit to the Douro Museum, then treat yourself to a tasting and a hearty, rustic-style lunch at a family-owned wine estate.

Day 4

Pinhão - cruising the River Douro - Vega de Terrón

Our ship winds its way through the pristine, dramatic, UNESCO-protected landscapes of the Douro River Valley. On a tasting at a prestigious port wine estate, tour the state-of-the-art facility and sample some exceptional Ports in a tasting room with spectacular views of the Douro Valley. Or join an invigorating hike through lush vineyards. Later, relax over a glass of wine at a local quinta.

Day 5

Vega de Terrón (Salamanca) - Barca d’Alva

Visit the historic university town of Salamanca - the ‘Golden City’ - famous for its sand-coloured buildings and abundance of churches, or see the region’s spectacular natural beauty, with a small boat cruise in a national park. Rejoin the ship in Barca d’Alva, and, if the weather is fair, the enticing aromas of a traditional barbecue will greet you, inviting you to enjoy this quintessential Portuguese cuisine on deck.

Day 6

Barca d’Alva - Pocinho - cruising the River Douro - Régua

Enjoy breathtaking scenery this morning as your ship cruises the UNESCO-listed upper Douro River Valley. Visit the medieval village of Castelo Rodrigo and its hilltop castle ruins with incredible views, and sample delicious local treats such as honey, almonds, olive oil, cheeses and wine. Or, opt to visit Portugal’s first archaeological park, Foz Côa, where Palaeolithic art was etched into the schist walls thousands of years ago. Please note: Exploring these sites will require considerable physical fitness.

Day 7

Cruising the River Douro - Porto (Guimarães)

Choose to visit Guimarães, the town where Portugal was born, with well-preserved architecture and stylish young residents. Or opt to explore one of Porto’s oldest areas, picturesque Ribeira, considered the soul of the city. In the evening, a special Gala Dinner will be prepared for you.

Day 8

Lisbon - Coimbra - Porto

Travel to Porto and en route, you’ll stop in Coimbra, the birthplace of six of Portugal’s kings. There you’ll see the university’s 18th century library, boasting frescoed ceilings and elaborate carvings. From here you’ll head off to enjoy a typical Portuguese lunch at a local restaurant, before continuing on to Porto to embark the Queen Isabel, the most luxurious vessel on the Douro.

Day 9

Entre-os-Rios - Régua - Pinhão

The Douro River winds through 100 miles of granite mountains. Visit the Douro Museum to learn about the river and its wines. See, too, Mateus Palace, which has one of the most beautiful gardens in the country. In the evening, tour the family-owned Quinta da Avessada, which produces premium Moscatel. Meet the owner and learn about the winemaking process. Partake in a rustic dinner featuring fine local wines and live traditional music.

Day 10

Vega de Terrón (Castelo Rodrigo)

Visit the 12th century walled village of Castelo Rodrigo, a captivating place with medieval streets, stone-walled houses, and a remarkably distinctive fountain.

Day 11

Vega de Terrón (Salamanca) - Barca d’Alva

From Vega de Terrón on the Spanish border you’ll travel overland to Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage city. This charming town’s sandstone buildings have gained an exquisite golden glow, giving the city its nickname, the ‘Golden City’. Salamanca boasts monumental churches and a historic university. Walk under Gothic arches and past ornately-decorated masonry walls. Then enjoy a flamenco show.

Day 12

Pinhão

Pinhão is the centre of Port winemaking. Today, you’ll take a winding road up to a quinta perched high in the hills to learn about and sample the country’s most celebrated beverage.

Day 13

Porto

Birthplace of Henry the Navigator (who launched Portugal’s voyages of exploration) and longtime hub of the Port wine trade, Porto combines well-preserved historic buildings with cutting-edge architecture and a booming cultural revival. Your tour will take you to the 19th-century Palácio da Bolsa and then on to the cathedral and the bustling shopping street, Santa Catarina. Or, if you prefer, see Porto from a different perspective, starting with a climb to the top of Clérigos Tower. Visit the world’s most opulent bookstore, Livraria Lello; then see the sweeping Avenida dos Aliados followed by a tasty stop at a pastelaria. A scenic cable-car ride returns you to the riverfront, where you can walk to spectacular São Francisco Church. After lunch, you’ll visit one of the city’s famed Port cellars.

Day 14

Porto (Guimarães)

Visit historic Guimaraes, which has been called the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. This UNESCO World Heritage city is dominated by Alfonso Henriques’s grand castle.
